Sean bean imdb4/24/2023 We’re encouraged to put ourselves in Cobden’s shoes but he is a convicted drink-driver, responsible for a man’s death. The real redemption is to be found in forgiveness. These are tiny pinpricks of light at the end of the tunnel: people doing their best with what they’ve got. Will we ponder both the crime and the punishment? The claustrophobia and horror render the moments of kindness – Cobden teaching fellow inmate Kavanagh (Terence Maynard) to read and write, the emotional succour offered by prison chaplain Marie-Louise (Siobhan Finneran) – almost unbearably poignant. This is television that hands an audacious amount of agency to the viewer: Time is either as brutal or as compassionate as we are willing to make it. There is very little grandstanding here – we are simply presented with the grim realities of our dysfunctional penal system and asked, implicitly, how we would cope. McGovern is known for polemics but the brilliance of Time is that it manages to show, not tell. As jeopardy surrounds his son, he too is pushed to his limits. McNally is as kind as he can afford to be in the circumstances. McNally is played by Stephen Graham – a model of intense restraint, expressing an infinity of inner turmoil with a puff of his cheeks. Cobden’s supervising officer Eric McNally is a good man, albeit under impossible duress himself due to an errant son who is struggling elsewhere in the overstretched and compromised prison system. Unwatchably bleak then? Thankfully, it’s not that simple. Still, there’s nothing Johnno can do to Cobden that is worse than the pain he inflicts on himself. There are bleak truths he must learn the hard way – not least that in prison, aggression is the most meaningful currency and he’s dangerously short of it. Cobden is routinely humiliated by the pitiless bully Johnno (the excellent James Nelson-Joyce). His second, Daniel (Jack McMullan), is a sneak and a liar. Retrieved 7 June 2021.Cobden’s first cellmate, Bernard (Aneurin Barnard), is a suicidal self-harmer. "Time review – Sean Bean and Stephen Graham astound in enraging prison drama". Billie Schwab Dunn, writing for Metro, praised the show, which was "elevated by the central performances – particularly Bean, who gently grounds us and provides a beam of light in all that darkness". So, too, are those from everyone in smaller roles, none of which is underwritten or sketchy, and who thicken the drama into something more profoundly moving and enraging at every turn". Writing in The Guardian, Lucy Mangan wrote: "The performances of Bean and Graham are, even though we have come to expect brilliance from them both, astonishing. Eric is forced to take greater risks to protect his family. Mark suffers a tragic personal loss and is given the chance to leave prison for a day. Does he tell the prison officers and be labelled a grass or risk the attacks becoming more and more violent? Eric’s son is attacked. Mark is being bullied by fellow inmate Johnno. When an inmate identifies prison officer Eric McNally’s weakness, he faces an impossible choice. Mark Cobden is sent to prison and has to learn quickly how to survive. The cameras moved to Liverpool to create the rest of the prison with a mash-up of courtrooms, police stations and education buildings, as well as exterior locations such as the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Widnes and the Southport Pier. The wings and cells prison scenes were filmed at HM Prison Shrewsbury, a former prison which was decommissioned in 2013, however most of the filming took place in the Liverpool City Region. However, when one of the most dangerous inmates identifies his weakness, Eric faces an impossible choice between his principles and his family. He meets Eric McNally, an excellent prison officer doing his best to protect those in his charge. Mark Cobden is newly imprisoned, consumed by guilt for his crime, and way out of his depth in the volatile world of prison life. In March 2022, the series was officially renewed for a second series, starring Jodie Whittaker. Starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham, it was first broadcast on BBC One on 6 June 2021. Time is a TV drama written by Jimmy McGovern and directed by Lewis Arnold.
